Several months ago I was at the Rock and Worship Roadshow and heard a unique and powerful song by Rend Collective Experiment called “Build Your Kingdom Here.” Its style is probably best described as an upbeat Irish folk song, and it immediately reminded me of one of my favorite bands, Mumford and Sons. Due to the inspiring lyrics and the musical energy of the song, I wanted to introduce it when we were highlighting the expressions of rejoicing and dancing in worship. This happens to be next Sunday, September 16. It is going to be a great service where we will use several musical styles to celebrate our God, and “Build Your Kingdom Here” will be one of the songs.
As its name indicates, the song centers around the prayer, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt 6:10). Hearing a song like this reminds me how I should focus on this prayer far more in my life. It is a prayer that turns my focus towards God and His greatness, stirs my faith to pray for big things, and creates an expectation to see God do amazing things. God uses His people, the church, to be part of bringing His kingdom to earth, and this song also includes prayers that we would live kingdom focused lives. You can read some of the great prayers and declarations in the lyrics of the song by clicking the WorshipTogether link. As a preview, one of my favorite lines in the song says, “No force of hell can stop Your beauty changing hearts.”
