Relationship
Christianity is all about a relationship; a real and vital relationship with Jesus Christ that makes a relationship with God both possible and powerful.
It’s not about religion. It’s not a set of rules to be followed or a bunch of traditions to be kept. It’s ultimately about trust. Trust that Jesus is who he said he is; can do what he said he can do; and will make a way for us to enter eternal life with him through his death and resurrection. It’s not about how great we are; rather, it’s about how great he is.
Who is Jesus?
There are many gods we can worship: Buddah, Mohammed, Hari Krishna, our self-sufficiency … But here’s the deal: life is a mess, we can’t do it all on our own and Jesus is the only one who has come to rescue us. He’s the only one capable of rescuing us. He’s the hero of all heroes; the God of all gods. He is the central character of the story that encompasses all our stories. He gives so much more than He requires and he’s the only one who claims to actually love us and care for us individually. It’s all about Him. Always has been. Always will be. Forever.
How to Know Jesus
Learn about him through his Word. How can you cry out for a savior if you don’t know who to trust? Reading the Bible will prove to you that Jesus is trustworthy. It won’t answer every single one of your questions, but it will reveal his power, his love and his faithfulness to you. Start by reading the Gospel of John. Ask God, “If you are real, open my heart and my mind and reveal yourself to me.”
Believe in your heart. Talk to him like he was in the room with you. Tell him you believe that he is the Son of God and you accept his payment for your failures and sins. Acknowledge that you cannot rescue yourself and that you need him as your savior. If you don’t yet believe these things, be honest! Tell him, but also ask him to increase your faith so that you will believe. He loves that prayer.
Confess with your mouth. Tell somebody, anybody, about your decision to trust Jesus.
Be baptized. Call the church office and set up an appointment to meet with one of the pastors. They would love to talk to you about your new faith and arrange for you to be baptized.
Why the Church?
You may ask, “If it’s all about me and Jesus, why do I need to bother with church?” First of all, the church is not a building or a location or an organization, although; those elements exist. The church is people who have been brought together as brothers and sisters by Jesus. The church is a family. Christianity is not a individual religion or faith. It is to be experienced in community. Your life shared with others – this is where we learn acceptance and to accept others, to receive love and to love others, to share the burdens and joys of life with others.
